Got a new dog that I need help learning to control?

It is a Neapolitan mastiff that is about eight months old and does not like to listen. I bought a choke collar for it so that it will not run into traffic. I know that they are a hard headed bread so do yo think that a 10 gauge electrical extension will be enough of a whip to get its attention.
